Yoni Excellence Awards Board Unveils Date and Place for its Maiden 2019 Yoni Excellence Awards Ceremony

Following both the local and international headlines of the Award Ceremony and Heritage Conversation, the Yoni Excellence Awards Board is excited to unveil the date and place of the 2019 Yoni Excellence Awards Ceremony.

It is abundantly now clear that this all-important Yonian event needs no longer be doubted as previously allayed by the Chairperson of the Board, John Yoni Yusif Fofanah Snr., that the awards ceremony is in the heartbeat of Yonians and a collaborative effort in ensuring that history begins in Yoni and most importantly among young like-minded indigenes of both Yoni Mabanta and Yoni Mamela chiefdoms.

Yoni was an amalgamation of two chiefdoms with strong historical connections; but has recently been de-amalgamated into Yoni Mamela and Yoni Mabanta chiefdoms. Lower Yoni traces its origin to a Themne warrior named 'Shebora Kondor' who drove the Mendes from the area and established himself as leader of a large chiefdom. Later, in the late 18th century, a slave raider known as ‘Fullah Mansa Gbabereh’ moved into the area, and some of Kondor's territory was ceded to him to create Yoni Mabanta.

Situated in Tonkolili district in the Northern province of Sierra Leone, and with an estimated population of about 110,000 people, Yoni is predominantly occupied by the Themne ethnic group; and widely regarded as the ‘Obai’ of all Themnes and the Poro society.

Yoni bears a lot of goodies in Sierra Leone: one of the oldest schools in the North - Yonibana Secondary School established in 1964; one of the very first, if not the first, community banks in the country - Yoni Community Bank; the first 100% modern technology college in the country - Canadian College of Modern Technology; the very first, if not the first, community radios in the country - Radio Gbafth; the leading entertainment complex in the north - G. Complex; the first and only private indigenous bank in the country - Union Trust Bank; the leading football team in the north - Yoni Shooting Stars F.C.; the leading private indigenous hotel in the country - Sahara Hotel, and a host to the leading forestry company in West Africa - Miro Forestry Company.

And Yoni is known as the birthplace of many of Sierra Leone's renowned academics, administrators, entrepreneurs, technocrats, politicians, diplomats, lawyers, medical doctors, journalists amongst many other professions.

Join us on Friday, 20th December 2019 at the International G-Complex in Mile 91 as we gather to recognize, celebrate and honour Yonians of excellence and exemplary achievements.
