Poro Society Declares Search Warrant for Alimu Jalloh

Alimu Jalloh Alimu Jalloh

Members of the secrete Poro Society here in Sierra Leone have issued a search warrant for Alimu Jalloh who stayed in Blama Town, Small Bo Chiefdom, Kenema District , Eastern Province of the country.

Blama Town and it environ is a place where the practices of this male secrete society, Poro, is complete entrenched and mostly young men are forced into joining them. This secret society usually comprises senior government officials, making it extremely difficult for police to intervene in protecting persons who are in conflict with members of the Poro Society. The society members forcefully attack schools to conscript young men into their society.

Against this backdrop, Alimu Jalloh found himself in this extremely challenging situation as his house in Blama Town was forcefully laid siege on and thronged into on one of the nights early March 2018. Witnesses say that Alimu Jalloh stiffly resisted them that night in an extremely dark environment.

Their intention, one of the neighbours who spoke to us on the strict grounds of anonymity confirmed, “was to get Alimu arrested and then taken to the secrete poro bush where the initiation was to take place.” Alimu, they say, was against being forcefully initiated into the Poro Society because he was a Muslim who had strict religious reservations on joining secrete societies.

Consequent of his stiff resistance, Alimu damaged some of the Poro Society members and narrowly escaped death. As a result, he is not a target as his life is now endangered. “He ran away and peoples alleged that his mother was the one who gave him money to run away,” a neighbor confirmed.

Meanwhile, here in Sierra Leone, the traditional Poro Society is a male society, where young men in provincial areas of the country are sometimes forcefully initiated in a process that is mostly excruciatingly painful.

However, many are speculating that Alimu’s own forceful initiation into the Poro Society could be fiercer and that he could likely die in there because the Poro leaders have now personal grievance against him. Reason being that he had damaged most of their members during the confrontation.

However, Alimu is still on the run and nowhere to be found.
