Parliament Approves New Minister of Planning & Economic Development

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has on Wednesday 19th June 2019 debated and approved the Second Report of the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service, chaired by the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mohamed Sidie Tunis.

The nominee, Dr. Francis Kai-Kai is to serve as the Minister of Planning and Economic Development with the ultimate objective of supporting President Bio to succeed in the implementation of policies and programmes contained in the “New Direction”. Dr. Kai-Kai, who was the former Sierra Leone Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York has 30 years of professional and managerial experience, including 13 years in the United Nations.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay said she has no scintilla of doubt that the nominee will do well for the country and that he will be working on a solid foundation laid by the former Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Nabeela Tunis. She encouraged the nominee to work in the interest of women, children and the country as a whole.

On the other hand, the Deputy Opposition Leader, Hon. Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said even though they had good reason not to be part of the screening process, they already know what the nominee was capable of doing and achieving.

Contributing, the Independent Candidate from Pujehun District, Hon. Shiaka Musa Sama praised President Bio for selecting qualified Sierra Leoneans to serve the State, whilst referring to Dr. Francis Kai-Kai as “passionate about development”. He said the only way to effect change in the New Direction is putting the right people in the right places and Dr. Kai-Kai best suites the position.

Concluding the debate, the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mohamed Sidie Tunis also commended President Bio for nominating qualified Sierra Leoneans to serve the country, the MPs for doing justice to the debate, whilst appreciating the nominee and wished him well in his new appointment.

Other MPs spoke to the motion.
