As their party’s interest supercedes patriotism and nationalism… Sierra Leone is between an Arrogant SLPP & a Selfish APC

Many will say it is political propaganda which geared towards making their parties seen as the better option for Sierra Leone. However, what has been so shocking over the years is that the two leading political parties in the country- the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) have both never for once put the plight of our suffering masses into consideration whenever they take their actions.

From portraying ethno-regional and ethno-political divides, Sierra Leone has since the election of a new president in April 2018 been engulfed in a pandemonium of cold war. Every single sector of the society stinks off tribal sentiments, a mantra that neither the APC nor the SLPP has prioritized the interest of Sierra Leoneans. For them, it is political revenge or political hate, and not once actions that protect the Rule of Law and Fundamental Human Rights. Most shocking is an opposition wishing the ruling party untold mayhem.

However what do we expect when a current SLPP government chooses to rule on the bastion of hate and retribution?? President Bio himself has been someone whose excesses have been a cause for alarm. From using the Judiciary to impose a Speaker on the majority party in the House of Parliament; to summarily sacking all politically appointed diplomats through an Executive Order without their complete repatriation costs; then to dissolving all Boards of Parastatals in a single day; with addition to also preside over a government that has manifested blatant disregard for the Rule of Law and the protection of fundamental human rights by letting 9 elected opposition MPs maliciously lose their seats through a troubled judiciary.

Indeed, these amongst many others have so far been the records of President Bio. From all indications, in a peaceful democracy like ours, President Bio himself has not been a solution to these challenges.  President Bio is the President who made a total of 14 appointments in a single night with almost all of them being Southeasterners. Just one of them, Umaru Napoleon Koroma who was appointed Chairman of National Commission for Privatization (NCP) was Northerner but he has also now been. To make things worse, all of them were men. Not a single woman!!

Many will say the SLPP is revenging against what some of their party loyalists suffered at the hands of the previous APC regime. Oh yes! The SLPP government of President Bio believes in vengeance as against believing in the protection of the Rule of Law. But then, their very existence has reduced our sacred government to a conduit pipe for injustice and a machinery to propel hate and discontent against its citizens.

However, one may think that the SLPP’s excesses have been the citadel for the current wave of hate and untold political instability in Sierra Leone. But on a fast note, we may also rekindle our thoughts about once rich ministers who all abandoned this struggling economy. Many spent billions in the previous general election to get the APC re-elected. But if one may ask: WERE ARE THEY?? Some stole unimaginable fortunes from state coffers and today they have abandoned Sierra Leone for expensive mansions overseas.

Indeed, these were government officials who enjoyed the very best and ran a government administration which poor university students were driven from classes and exams halls just because they failed to pay their tuition fees. Selfishly, their own children were attending the very best universities overseas but they unleashed an apocalypse against poor students here in Freetown. I can still remember when in 2011 thirty-one (31) students who stood for their rights to inhabit hostels were rusticated from my own college- Fourah Bay College (FBC), with many of whom never cared to proceed their courses again.

In governance, though since the inception of the Act No 6 of the 1991 Constitution, Sierra Leone has never got a Vice President who successfully served in two (2) consecutive terms. However, Former President  Ernest Bai Koroma, current Chairman and Leader of the APC remains the only leader to have with malice summarily dismissed a Vice President without benefits, securities and worse of it all in a disgraceful manner

Today, after they have been booted out of government, the same APC believes that SLPP should fail again. But the question is if SLPP fails who then will suffer?? It is not President Bio or any of his government officials but rather the innocent masses.

Meanwhile, sadly to say that as we are now as a nation whilst the SLPP continues to exhibit revenge and arrogance in governance, the APC’s only wish on the other hand is for Sierra Leone to be branded a failed state. But the question still remains, between the APC’s wish for mayhem and the SLPP’s arrogance, then where patriotism could be found in Sierra Leone?
